Deer Carcass Disposal

Orange CWD Kiosk next to a large dumpster

Portage County Solid Waste has a dedicated dumpster onsite now through January 31, 2024. After January 31, 2024 deer carcasses and remains will no longer be accepted. This service is only available to residents. Processing facilities and other businesses will need to make arrangements to have deer carcasses and remains sent directly to the Adams County or Marathon County Landfill.

If you need to dispose of deer carcasses or remains outside of the time frame listed above, the Marathon County Landfill will accept them directly for disposal throughout the year for a fee. As a reminder, it is illegal to dispose of waste on any public lands or roadways, or on private property without permission. Additional guidance on deer carcass disposal is available at dnr.wi.gov/topic/wildlifehabitat/carcass.html.

The Portage County Solid Waste Transfer Facility is also a CWD testing site. Please place deer heads for testing in the self-service kiosk located next to the carcass disposal dumpster.

Lastly, deer hides can be donated to the local Lions Club to support their programs for the Wisconsin Lions Camp, which is dedicated to providing quality camping and outdoor experiences for Wisconsin youth and adults with disabilities. Fleet Farm also accepts deer hides.

Good luck hunters.
