Crime Stoppers

Portage County Crime Stoppers is not officially affiliated with Portage County and is its own organization. Crime Stoppers consists of a board with civilians and law enforcement representatives working together to solve crimes in the County since 1996. The board consists of 14 civilian members who administer all payouts and the operation of the organization. There are also three non-voting law enforcement members who are the liaison officers between the civilian board and their respective law enforcement organizations. The law enforcement representatives are from the Portage County Sheriff's Office, Stevens Point Police Department, and the Plover Police Department. Crime Stoppers ads run every other week on several local radio stations (taped by WYTE radio), local newspapers, and WAOW (Channel 9) television. Both the radio and television stations tape and broadcast for free as a public service. Crime Stoppers also places the ads on Facebook and the Sheriff's Office website.

Portage County Crime Stoppers has been very successful in getting the idea of citizen envelopment out to the Portage County residents. Since its inception, Portage County Crime Stoppers has paid out over $20,000 in rewards. As of the end of 2013, they have helped to recover over $185,000 in property and have seen nearly 300 people arrested from tips to the Crime Stoppers tip line.

Jacobs Junior High Schools along with Stevens Point Area Senior High School (SPASH) are active participants in the Quick 50 program.
