Planning Section

The Planning Section is responsible for assisting the Portage County Board with drafting, adopting, and implementing State-mandated plans such as the Comprehensive Plan and Farmland Preservation Plan, Federal-mandated plans such as the All-Hazard Mitigation Plan, as well as working on other large-scale initiatives such as groundwater management planning, outdoor recreation planning, economic development, bicycle/pedestrian planning, and partnering with other County agencies and coalitions on topics such as public health and the arts economy.

Upon request, Planning Section staff also serve as "professional staff" for our 17 Towns, nine Villages, and the City of Stevens Point, providing land use/comprehensive planning services and assistance.

The Portage County Comprehensive Plan (PDF) was completed as part of a larger, county-wide planning project during the years 2001 to 2007 and is available here: Portage County Comprehensive Plan. An update to this plan is currently underway.

Portage County residents may submit a written or electronic request to be added to a list of persons maintained by the Portage County Planning and Zoning Department who wish to receive notice of any proposed adoption or amendment of the County Comprehensive Plan that may affect the allowable use of their own property.
