Services & Functions

The Risk Management division operates the self-insured Worker's Compensation Program of Portage County. It is also responsible for the operation of the Safety Programs of the County.

The Risk Management Specialist reports directly to the Finance Director and acts as a liaison to the Risk Management Committee.

The Risk Management Specialist is responsible for the following:

  • Filing all worker's compensation claims
  • Coordinating claim handling with TPA
  • Maintaining OSHA reports
  • Reviewing accident reports and referrals to County Safety Officer
  • Providing personal contact with the injured employee
  • Assisting TPA as liaison to county departments
  • Attending worker's compensation appeals board hearings
  • Maintaining contact with medical, claims, and rehabilitation service providers
  • Advising personnel regarding safety and health procedures, equipment, and personal protective devices
  • Providing ergonomic assessments
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of County Safety Programs
  • Providing staff support services to Safety Officer and Risk Management Committee
  • Facilitating Safety Issues Committee Meetings
  • Keeping abreast of changing laws regarding OSHA Standards
  • Managing short- and long-term safety programs to eliminate OSHA violations
  • Managing safety training, job analysis, and behavioral modifications
  • Assisting in creating and managing a safety budget
  • Developing and maintaining a standardized record and reporting system for the safety training and testing requirement
