Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs), formerly known as first responders, are volunteers or part-time employees within their communities who are certified by the State of Wisconsin. Many of the responders are also trained to the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level. They are dispatched when an ambulance is called and often arrive first to provide care and sometimes life-saving interventions such as rescue breathing, defibrillation, or bleeding control before the paramedics arrive. EMRs and EMTs can also administer some emergency medications depending on their training and medical protocols. After the ambulance arrives, EMRs continue to assist in patient care and play an important role in scene management, lifting help, and safety.

The EMR units in Portage County are municipal-based services and regularly recruit EMRs and EMTs. Our system can also provide the training which is provided by Mid-State Technical College. An emergency medical responder course is approximately 70 hours.
